Dental Care Basics Your Dentist Wants You To Remember

Our overall health is riding on our health habits, especially our dental care habits. Simple steps we take like brushing our teeth can mean the difference between a healthy smile and a broken one. Here are the most basic things our dentist never wants us to know:

1. Proper brushing techniques should be done at least twice a day, the more the better. This includes using the right kind of toothbrush and toothpaste. The bristles on your toothbrush should be soft enough not to cause bleeding gums but it should also be firm enough not to bend upon use. A battery-operated toothbrush can effectively remove plaque from teeth and will make brushing easier. Your toothbrush should be held at an angle and should be thoroughly rinsed right after use to prevent growth of bacteria. A toothbrush should be replaced every four to six months.

2. If you sometimes get stuck situations where you can't brush your teeth, be sure to always have Xylitol in your pockets. Chewing gum that has Xylitol can effectively reduce bacterial accumulation in the mouth.

3. Avoid getting oral piercings. This is in no way an infringement on your rights to self-expression, however, piercings are the number one cause of oral infections, especially if it's a tongue piercing. It's also the number one reason for chipped teeth. So say no to oral piercings.

4. Do not skimp on your dentist. A bad dentist could end up to be more expensive than a good one. Your teeth should take more priority than all your cosmetic products. In meeting new people, the first thing they will notice will be your eyes and teeth-not your hair or your designer clothes and shoes.

5. Always ask. There are things our dentist will not tell us, either because they forgot or we don't need to know so it's make sure to clear everything before you get out of the clinic. Matters like insurance are kind of tricky so if you don't want any unexpected bills coming your way, figure it out first. Chances are your dentist and his staff will not know what your insurance covers. This also goes for sensitive issues like if you have bad breath or not? They will never tell you that your mouth smells funky, not unless you ask. Not only is it kind of rude to say to someone's face that they've got stinky breath, but it's also an awkward situation. So talk it all out while you're there sitting face to face to your dentist.

6. It's not a good idea to bring in pictures of celebrities and tell your doctor to give you those exact set of teeth. No, not going to happen. There are other things to consider in choosing a new set of teeth aside from a celebrity's perfect teeth.

7. Bleeding gums are not something to ignore. Have it checked.

8. Floss before you brush. Your toothpaste will reach those hard to reach areas more if you remove food debris between your teeth beforehand.
